Western and Southern Open history
The Western and Southern Open started out life as the Cincinnati Open in 1899. The first tournament was held at the Avondale Atheltic Club at Xavier University in Ohio, switching venues several times before settling upon its longest-standing home, Cincinnati Tennis Club, in 1903. Today, the tournament is played out indoors at the state-of-the-art Lindner Family Tennis Centre.
A popular tournament on home soil, the Western and Southern Open finally came into its own during the late 1970s when new management moved in and made some serious changes. Huge financial investment and marketing made this tennis tournament a mainstay of the international sporting calendar, with the championship earning itself a place as a main fixture of both the men's Grand Prix Tennis Tournament and Grand Prix Super Series throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Despite opening up to a wealth of international talent, American players have tended to dominate the courts, although in recent years foreign players have erupted onto the scene and challenged long-held records and ranking successes. As of 2017, Swiss-born Roger Federer had earned no less than seven first-place wins in the men's singles championship. Keen to see who earns the top spot this year? An increasingly popular championship
Although it's not the largest championship held in the U.S., it's one of the most established and commands plenty of respect in the industry. In 2010, the Open brought in a whopping 230,000 attendees over its 16 days and 29 play sessions, topping previous records. What's more, with constant reinvestment and upgrading, the Western and Southern Open stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the biggest tennis events in the world. The Lindner Family Tennis Centre has no less than four different courts dedicated to tournament play, with the centre court comfortably accommodating 11,000 spectators. It's the only tournament outside of the Grand Slam majors to have more than three courts.
