Some quick background to Samoan rugby league
Samoa's rugby league team may not have a century of history behind them, but they have quickly established themselves in the world of Rugby League. Also known as Toa Samoa, the team first competed on the international stage in 1986. Bursting onto the scene in true Samoan style, they came close to winning that year's Pacific Cup, reaching the final the first time around.
Since 1995, the team has competed at every single Rugby League World Cup, are a constant fixture in the World Sevens event as well as one-off Test Matches against other Pacific island nations like Tonga and Fiji.
Much of Samoa's talent is home-grown, but ply their trade in the New Zealand professional game - giving them extra steel and technical experience. They don't have a home ground as such, and play most of their matches on foreign soil, although Apia, the nation's capital, does host Tests every now and then.
Great occasions in Samoa's rugby league history
Samoa have only been playing international matches since 1986, but they have racked up some world-class performances in a short time, scoring victories against nations as diverse as France, Scotland, Wales and the United States.
The first great milestone in Samoan rugby league came in 1990. After two previous failures, the team defeated NZ Maori in the Pacific Cup final, before repeating the feat in 1992.
After that, the team improved steadily, notching up their first World Cup appearance in 1995 where they thrashed France 56-10. In the 2000s, the team reached two World Cup Quarter Finals and graduated from competing with small island nations to mixing it with major Test teams.
Acceptance into the Four Nations came in 2014 where, although they lost three times, they ran England incredibly close.
