Rogers Cup Tennis in Montreal - Event History
Held annually, the Rogers Cup is a men's Masters 1000 event for the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and a Premier 5 Tournament on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. Today games are played on hard courts a switch from the original clay surfaces used when the event started, back in 1881.
Every August Montreal runs the event simultaneously with Toronto. In odd-numbered years Montreal hosts the men while Toronto sees the women play. Corresponding men's and women's matches are held on the same day but a couple of hours apart to allow for TV scheduling. Until 2000 when Canadian communication's giant Roger took over the event was sponsored by leading tobacco names - Rothmans, Player's and Du Maurier.
