Rent was written by Jonathan Larson and was inspired by the opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini. It is the story of the lives of a group of young creatives in New York City as they struggle to pay their bills. It also focuses on the HIV/AIDS crisis of the late 80s/early 90s. It mirrors La Bohème's tale of bohemians living together in Paris in the 1800s, updated to the East Village. It follows lead characters Mark Cohen, Roger Davis and Mimi Márquez, as they navigate drugs, relationships, and art.
Rent started life when playwright Billy Aronson first imagined adapting the story of La Bohème. He collaborated with Larson, and together they wrote some of the show's biggest hits such as "I Should Tell You". Larson then took over the project and altered the story. It took Larson many years to complete, and he had to work as a waiter to fund his dream. The show finally opened at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1993.
