On more than one occasion during their history in the Football World Cup, Poland developed a reputation for being the tournament’s “surprise package”. Between 1974 and 1986, the Red and Whites qualified on four successive occasions for the Football World Cup, stunning fans worldwide after claiming third place in both the 1974 and 1982 tournaments. The Poles have once again qualified for the tournament in 2018 and fans are hopeful for a strong showing in Russia, seeing as the team has surged clear at the top of Group E of the European Qualifiers, followed by Denmark.
Poland are not quite as successful in the European Championship as they are in the Football World Cup, only making a handful appearances at the tournament (but managing to reach the quarter-finals in 2016). Their most capped player in history is defender Michał Żewłakow, who pulled on the national jersey a total of 102 times during an illustrious playing career. Their top scorer is Włodzimierz Lubański, who hit the back of the net on 48 separate occasions. Today, the Poland national team play their home games at 58,000 capacity stadium PGE Narodowy, which doubles as the main stadium for domestic cup finals in the country. Summer Games gold and evolution
The best ever Poland team is considered to be the side of the 1970s which guided the nation to their best ever World Cup finish. Poland also enjoyed tremendous Olympic success during this period, picking up a Gold medal in the 1972 Munich games and a Silver medal at Montreal 1976. They also turned heads at the 1992 Barcelona games, eventually going on to pick up a second Silver medal.
Poland’s terrific momentum in recent years is down to the breeding of a wonderful selection of exciting players. Many of these footballers are still producing some marvellous performances on the international stage to this day. One particularly familiar face is Robert Lewandowski, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of the modern age. His captaincy has seen Poland march to victory against several national rivals and turned the country into one of the most respected football sides in Europe.
