Mamma Mia! Musical
Mamma Mia!’s first stage performance on 6 April 1999 was in London at the Prince Edward Theatre. The plot was written by Catherine Johnson, a British playwright, and the songs were composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, ABBA songwriters. The romantic comedy, which takes place on some Greek islands, is about the main character’s, Sophie’s, mission to find her unknown father. She has been preparing her dream wedding and one of the only ways to make it perfect is to have her father walk her down the aisle and give her away. The problem is that her mom refuses to talk about it. She finds three possible men that could be her father and she brings them to confront her mother… all just a day before her anticipated wedding. Although Mamma Mia! was made increasingly more popular with the hit movie also called Mamma Mia! in 2008, it is the musical that remains a fan favorite. The name of the musical (and movie featuring Julie Walters, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan) come from ABBA’s famous 1975 album which contains some of their most famous songs such as “Dancing Queen” and “Take a Chance on Me”.
