All about Lalah Hathaway
She is the daughter of Donny Hathaway, a famous soul singer, author – among other albums – of Live, considered one of the best live albums ever recorded. Despite her father’s success, Lalah Washington has managed to hold her ground and live away from his father’s shadow. Even though she was off to a rocky start in her beginnings, she has managed to collect herself and plough ahead album after album until going on to become one of the genre’s most recognizable stars.
On her musical collaborations, it is worth pointing out that she has partnered with Marcus Miller, Meshell Ndegéocello, and Mary J. Blige to great success. In 2009, Stax Records announced that it was signing Hathaway, a step in her career that was of particular relevance to her, given the prominence of this label in the soul genre. The record label rooted in soul music eventually released her most popular album so far, Self-Portrait (2008), which sold over 9,400 copies in the first week. Her popularity has only increased with her following albums Where it All Begins (2011) and Lalah Hathaway Live (2015), and her brand new album Honestly (2017) is expected to do the same!
