Prolific and Well-Loved
Joaquín Sabina has actively produced music since he released his first album. His first album was Inventario and was released in 1978. The album didn’t make a lot of waves on the music charts, but still won him some loyal fans. However, when he made the move to the CBS label, (which later became Sony) and released Malas Companas, his career took off. Sabina’s first number 1 hit single, Pongamos Que Hablo de Madrid, earned him recognition around the world. After that, he released his first live album, La Mandragora with his fellow bandmates, Alberto Perez and Javier Krahe. The album did receive criticism because of its sexually taboo and often political lyrical content. Politics play a prominent role in Sabina’s work. Politics also led him to participate in the anti-NATO movement. In 1983, Sabina released Ruleta Rusa, his 3rd album. In 1985, he released Juez y Parte; and around this time, he released Viceversa en Directo. In 1987, he released Hotel, Dulce Hotel which did well in Spain and shortly after that El Hombre del Traje Gris. With 1990 came Pious Lies and in 1992, he released Fisica y Quimica which did well throughout the Americas. The albums that followed were Esta Boca es Mia, Yo, mi, me, contigo, and 19 Dias y 500 Noches. For some reason, these albums did exceptionally well. They went multi-platinum and earned him worldwide acclaim.
A Performer with Depth
Sabina suffered a stroke in 2001. However, he did reach full recovery after a year long bout with depression. He took some time away from releasing music and performing to recuperate. He returned to his work in 2002 to perform Dimelo en la Calle. After that, he released a double album called Diario de un Peaton which added 12 songs and a book with his own original illustrations to Dimelo en la Calle. In 2005, he released Alivio de Luto with an accompanying DVD that contained music videos, interviews, homemade recordings and acoustic versions of songs. Joaquín Sabina performs solo and with other musicians, especially for his live albums. Some artists he has performed with include Joan Manuel Serrat, (Dos Pajaros de Un Tiro), the group Viceversa in a live concert in 1986, and Javier Krahe and Alberto Perez, (in La Mandragora). In 2009, Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gallardon presented him with the Prize of the City of Madrid, naming him one of the most important people to the city, one who helps to give it a good image.
