The show opened on Broadway in 1987 and went on to win three Tonies and five Drama Desk Awards. In 1991, it debuted in the West End to equal acclaim, collecting Olivier Awards for Best Director and Best Actress. Since then there have been numerous award-winning revivals all around the world. The Sydney Opera House staged a star-studded version in 1993, as did the Victoria Arts Centre in Melbourne in 1998. In 2014 Disney released a sparkling screen adaptation directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago) and starring Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.
