Fun Home The Musical
With your Fun Home tickets from StubHub you can step into the world of a family that's just like yours, or is it? Fun Home takes a heartwarming look at family life in a totally new but gripping way.
Fun Home - a family background
Fun Home is based on the graphic memoir written in 2006 by award-winning cartoonist Alison Bechdel. The memoir recounts her family life as she came to terms with her sexuality. The original novel was written in cartoon form, a simple device that did little to conceal Bechdel's mastery of storytelling and her knowledge of literary references. In the musical version, these references were swapped for an emotional playlist of songs. With little or no portrayal of lesbians in musical theatre, the producers took a leap of faith that it would work but the decision to use Lisa Kron for the book and lyrics and Jeannine Tesori for the music was spot on. Fun Home was premiered off-Broadway in September 2013 before transferring to the intimate setting of the Circle in the Square Theatre 18 months later. A national tour began in September 2016.
The narrative of Fun Home charts the troubled relationship Alison Bechdel had with her father. Unable to accept or own up to the fact that he was gay he remained in the closet all his life, a decision which caused untold misery to him and his family. The storytelling is multilayered but builds up to two points in time that were pivotal to Alison's life – her coming-out as a lesbian in her first year of college and the suicide of her father just a short time after. Fun Home takes its name from her father's endless quest to restore his Victorian funeral home – shortened to "Fun Home".
Fun Home - a poignant award winner
Fun Home was the 2015 winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Lyrics, Best Composer, Best Direction and Best Actor. The author herself took to the stage to accept the Tony for Best Musical along with three other Alison Bechdels. These were the Tony-nominated actresses who played her at different ages in the musical.
