France Rugby Union background and history
The British introduced rugby to France in 1872, and their first official test match took place on New Years Day 1906 against New Zealand in Paris. France soon formed part of the original Five Nations tournament in 1910 (before it was called the Home Nations). In 1959, France became Five Nations champions and achieved a first Grand Slam title in 1968.
Since the 1987 World Cup, France have qualified for every knockout round and, more than this, have reached the final three times. They still have been unable to win the title though - and lost to the All Blacks in 1987/2011 and in 1999 to Australia. France hosted the 2007 Rugby World Cup but lost the semi-final to England.
Thrilling encounters
The France Rugby Union team is, as of July 2017, ranked 8th by the International Rugby Board and were ranked in 2nd place in 2007. Their lowest ever ranking is 9th in 2016. France's biggest ever win was against Brazil in 1974 with a score of 7-99. The teams biggest defeat came against New Zealand in 2007 with a score of 61-10.
One of France's best players was Serge Blanco. Blanco played as a fullback in 93 test matches for France from 1980 - 1991. During this time France won the Five Nations Grand Slams in 1981 and 1987. Blanco also scored the winning try against Australia in the World Cup in 1987. Blanco was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in 1997 and into the IRB Hall in 2011.
