A folk tale with a long history, the most well-known version of the story was penned by Charles Perrault in the 1600s, although he did not event the story of Cinderella. The original television musical Cinderella aired on CBS on March 31 in 1957 and starred Julie Andrews as Cinderella. It was watched by in excess of 100 million viewers and subsequently nominated for two Emmy Awards. The show soon became a firm favourite in the minds and hearts of the viewing public and two remakes followed the original release.
On January 25, 2013, the stage version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella made its debut on Broadway. The play introduced a new book adaptation by Douglas Carter Beane and was directed Mark Brokaw. With more and more world coverage, the show is now appearing on stages around the world. A family favourite it is a crowd pleaser and known for its beautiful costumes and music.
The show includes all the songs made famous by Rodgers and Hammerstein, including "In My Own Little Corner," "Impossible - It's Possible" as well as the crowd favourite "Ten Minutes Ago". The show is romantic and funny and includes some sterling performances by a seasoned cast. However, the show contains some content that has never been seen before in any other stage show or film.
The show has a pro-feminist slant and has been hailed as one which carries an important message for independent girls and women today, according to the show's director, who believes that the character in the musical makes her own choices and has her own personality and inner strength. Prince Charming also has more depth and feeling that in previous renditions. This revamped and rewritten version includes some differences from the original story penned by Charles Perrault.
