Basketball History
Basketball has a rich and storied history. The sport was founded in 1891 by Dr James Naismith when he was told that he had just two weeks to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for rowdy pupils at Springfield YMCA. Shortly afterwards the game was invented, Naismith noted down the 13 basic rules, and the rest, as they say, is history. The first pro league, the National Basketball League, was formed in 1898. This didn't last too long, however. It wasn't until the NBA was formed in 1949 that the sport, on a professional level, really took off.
It's not just in the USA where the sport (and players) is huge. the International Basketball Federation was formed in 1932 by eight nations - Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland. Since then, other countries have successfully adopted the sport like Spain and the Philippines.
