An American in Paris - a romantic history
An American in Paris takes its inspiration from the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly. Hollywood producer Arthur Freed heard George Gershwin's composition "An American in Paris" and bought it as the starting point for a musical film written by Alan Jay Lerner. The stage musical is a glamorous new version written by Craig Lucas with choreography by the Royal Ballet's Christopher Wheeldon. Although a lifelong Gene Kelly fan Wheeldon didn't watch the film while choreographing the musical but instead worked directly from Gershwin's music. While An American in Paris is full of fantastic songs and acting its real strength lies in Wheeldon's choreography which lets dance carry the action at key moments.
An American in Paris follows the story and dreams of Jerry Mulligan a young American GI broken by his war experiences who moves to Paris after the war in the hope of becoming a painter. After his chance meeting with the beautiful dancer Lise Dassin, the City of Light becomes the backdrop for the irresistible love that grows between them as well as the strong friendships Jerry finds in Paris. Although post-war themes form the back story to this new musical it remains sunny and happy while looking at friendship and love in a sensuous and romantic way.
